More space for a restaurant by the sea
We love to solve complex engineering and technical problems, and therefore accepted the challenge of constructing a second floor above the Robinson Club restaurant located on the shore of the Minsk Sea.
Let's start with why the floor superstructure is a technologically complex process, because it all depends on whether the current building can withstand the extra load.
At the start, the specialists of the design department of Tabak Invest LLC carried out a survey of the existing building to determine:
• the technical condition of foundations and walls;
• whether there is enough margin of rigidity and structural strength;
• the optimal planning solution for the second floor.
When all the calculations confirmed the ability to realize this ambitious task, we were given several practical tasks by the customer:
1. Create an additional restaurant area that can be used year-round.
2. Repeat the geometry of the existing buildings.
3. Propose a design solution that will fit into the bearing capacity of the existing building frame. The pile foundation, which is complicated by weak soil, must support the load of the superstructure.
4. Meet the deadlines (prepare the facility for the summer 2019).
So what did we have at the start? The construction of a canopy over a 346 m² terrace is not a typical project for Astron, because the company specializes in single-story buildings for businesses from 1000 m². The open terrace of the 2nd floor of the L-shaped Restaurant with a height of 2.812 m is located on the shore of the Minsk Sea.
The calculation of loads allowed us to develop three unique solutions that were proposed to the customer. Prompt coordination of the best option made it possible to quickly begin work.
Although our company specializes in serial solutions for industrial buildings, we are willing to undertake the development of non-trivial solutions. Vladimir Marinin, a leading design engineer at Astron, developed all the individual units of support, fastenings, and connections in the shortest possible time. To calculate the entire frame, taking into account the peculiarities of the architect's idea, the SCIA Engineer software package was used. Part of the nodes had to be calculated individually, because for this task there simply was no standard solution.
To guarantee the reliability of the building under construction, we used a two-layer roofing system with a thickness of 260 mm. These elements of exterior decoration are made of profiled steel panels, which are made by cold rolling from sheet steel 0.50 mm thick, grade S550. The width of the panels is 1000 mm, the wave height is 38 mm. The panels are mounted externally to the roof girders with self-drilling stainless steel self-tapping screws.
Why did we use this particular roofing system?
• The inner sides of the panels do not need additional decoration, and the roof structure provides the necessary fire resistance of the roof.
• Acoustic panels can be installed to absorb sound more intensely.
• The panels are suitable for rooms with high humidity. Another touch to the uniqueness of this building is the swing. We installed them at the request of the customer on the second floor of the extension under the ridge. This is a not very difficult, but rather unusual task, which Astron specialists solved with a small pipe: they welded the fasteners and bolted them to the lower belt of the beams under the roof.

Our interim results:
• for the specified period of work, the costs were kept strictly within the established budget;
• deadlines were met;
• the summer awning was replaced with an all-weather superstructure with a view of the Minsk Sea;
• the design decisions were implemented within the allowable load on the existing building frame without changing the foundations of the existing building.
Managing Director of Robinson Club, Sergey Taranyuk:
“We had the idea of such an add-on a long time ago. We had a summer PVC tent, but it was difficult to use in winter. But to realize our ideas we had no constructive ideas, nor the team that would undertake the construction on the existing foundations.nor the team that would undertake the construction on the existing foundations. Engineering solutions appeared that made it possible to bring ideas to life. A part of the terrace of our main restaurant was built as a separate room with universal functionality, especially since we already make it warm. We have created a new hall that is suitable for weddings, banquets and any other events. Bonus - a beautiful view of the Minsk Sea…”
