REQUIREMENT
Optimised storage and sorting processes for a highly scalable fulfilment centre
Amazon needed a logistics building at its Magdeburg site that could move large quantities of goods quickly, safely and efficiently. The key requirement was to structure storage capacity, sorting and supply chain processes in such a way that daily peak loads could be handled without delays. The building had to be able to accommodate high racking systems as well as modern conveyor and safety technology, combined with clear material flows and optimised routes.
The dimensions of the project set the framework: an area of 100,000 m², a length of 500 metres, an eaves height of 14 metres and two self-supporting spans of 24 metres each. These specifications required a technically sophisticated design, precise production and logistics that enabled continuous delivery and parallel assembly. At the same time, the construction times had to be adhered to closely in order to ensure that the building could be commissioned on schedule. The aim was to create a hall that guarantees high performance, flexible adaptability and robust operating processes in the long term.
RESULT
100,000 m² of logistics space with high performance and process reserves
The new Amazon fulfilment centre was built as a steel-frame hall using the Astron system and meets all requirements in terms of capacity, efficiency and operational safety. Of the 14 metre building height, 12 metres are fully available for storage, while the upper areas accommodate pipes and sprinkler systems. The self-supporting spans of 2 × 24 metres allow for a column-free area - ideal for flexible racking structures, conveyor technology and smooth material flows.
Precise processes were crucial for a project of this size. The components were delivered exactly according to the assembly progress, so that several teams could work in parallel. The scheduling and logistical coordination was designed to ensure that the construction time and budget were met in full. The result is a highly functional logistics centre that impresses with its clear structures, high-performance building technology and flexible hall geometry.
The building offers long-term scalability, enables efficient work processes and is designed for future adaptations in the fulfilment environment - a technically and economically optimised new building for one of Europe's largest online retailers.
MORE ABOUT MODERN WAREHOUSES AND LOGISTICS HALLS
The Amazon Fulfillment Centre shows how large logistics areas can be efficiently realised with modern steel construction systems. Free spans, high storage areas and optimised material flows are key features of high-performance warehouses and logistics halls.
Anyone planning a logistics hall or fulfilment centre benefits from modular solutions, precise prefabrication and short construction times. Further information can be found on our category page for warehouse & logistics halls.
