REQUIREMENT
Over 400 m in length. 16 m in height. Crane technology for 40 t loads.
LM Wind Power planned a new production hall in Goleniów for the manufacturing of rotor blades for modern onshore wind turbines, including the V172-7.2 MW turbine. The latest generation of rotor blades reach lengths of over 84 m and weigh around 40 t. During the manufacturing process, they must be lifted, rotated and transported between the individual production stations on several occasions.
The requirement was for a production hall over 400 m long and approximately 16 m high, with large column-free production areas capable of safely withstanding the high static and dynamic loads generated by the crane systems. At the same time, the structural framework, building geometry and production processes had to be optimally coordinated to ensure a reliable flow of materials and precise manufacturing.
RESULT
Buildings and crane technology planned as an integrated system
Astron developed and constructed a bespoke steel structure covering over 24,000 m² to meet the requirements of industrial rotor blade manufacturing. The building combines large column-free production areas with a structural framework designed to accommodate several 10-tonne double-girder overhead cranes, safely supporting the high static and dynamic crane loads generated during lifting operations.
Right from the engineering phase, the structural framework, crane runways and load assumptions are developed and coordinated as an integrated system. This results in robust solutions for demanding production halls that can safely support high crane loads over the long term whilst enabling cost-effective assembly and manufacturing processes.
Astron also develops bespoke structural solutions for integrated crane technology, even for higher load-bearing capacities. The structural design takes into account both vertical and horizontal crane loads, as well as the dynamic stresses arising from crane operation. This results in production halls for crane systems with load-bearing capacities exceeding 50 tonnes.
Steel construction for production halls with integrated crane systems
Production halls with integrated crane systems place particular demands on planning and the structural framework. Overhead cranes, crane runways and dynamic loads must be taken into account as early as the initial engineering phase to ensure that the building and production processes work together optimally. Large spans, high-ceilinged halls and column-free production areas create the conditions for efficient material flows and cost-effective production operations.
Astron develops steel structures for production halls with integrated crane systems – ranging from standard applications to sophisticated heavy-duty solutions. Right from the planning stage, crane runways, load assumptions and the structural framework are coordinated as an integrated system. This results in robust and cost-effective solutions that can safely withstand high static and dynamic loads over the long term.
Main contractors benefit from an experienced steel construction partner who coordinates engineering, fabrication and assembly from a single source. Clear lines of responsibility, digital planning processes and early coordination of all technical interfaces reduce project risks and ensure planning certainty – even for complex industrial projects with integrated crane technology.
