REQUIREMENT
New sugar refinery to expand production capacity
The Mazouz Group planned to build a new sugar refinery with a processing capacity of 2,000 tonnes of raw sugar per day in order to significantly expand its production capacity in Algeria. To this end, an industrial complex covering approximately 30,000 m² was planned, comprising 20 single-storey and multi-storey production, storage and technical buildings.
The challenge lay in designing all the load-bearing structures of the 20 buildings as a functioning integrated system and in harmonising all structural, spatial and process-related requirements. The large number of interfaces between the buildings, as well as the close integration of the production facilities, required consistently coordinated planning and precise coordination among all project stakeholders.
RESULT
4,900 tonnes of steel for an industrial complex comprising 20 buildings
Astron was responsible for the engineering, fabrication and erection of the entire steel structure for the whole refinery complex. A total of around 4,900 tonnes of steel was used. More than 15 engineers from four engineering teams coordinated the design of all 20 buildings in parallel within a single BIM model.
Thanks to early-stage clash detection and the seamless coordination of engineering, fabrication and assembly, design adjustments can be taken into account before construction begins, significantly reducing interfaces on site. The precisely coordinated steel construction solution enables the reliable integration of the production facilities and lays the foundations for an efficient and on-schedule construction process for the entire industrial complex.
Steel construction for complex industrial projects
Large-scale industrial projects place the highest demands on planning, coordination and execution. Production facilities, refineries, energy projects and logistics centres often consist of numerous interconnected buildings, different load-bearing structures and a multitude of technical interfaces. The success of such projects depends crucially on engineering, fabrication and assembly being closely coordinated from the outset.
Astron develops and delivers steel structures for complex industrial projects in Europe and beyond. Our in-house engineering teams, digital planning methods and coordinated project management enable the reliable delivery of even the most demanding construction projects. As early as the planning phase, the structural framework, production processes and technical systems are coordinated within a single digital model. This allows collisions to be identified at an early stage, interfaces to be reduced and construction processes to be reliably prepared.
The range of services extends from individual steel structures to complete industrial complexes comprising several buildings. Engineering, fabrication and assembly are seamlessly integrated. Main contractors benefit from clear lines of responsibility, short decision-making processes and precisely coordinated project management – from the initial planning stage through to successful assembly on site.
