Nearly Zero-Energy Buildings: A Profitable Investment
The development of NZEB concepts for industrial applications is still a relatively new field. Why?
In the past, research in the field of buildings’ energy performance largely focused on residential buildings and office buildings. But the European political objectives for 2020 and 2030, and the subsequent increase in national requirements are forcing the industry to start finding better solutions as all new buildings have to comply with NZEB requirements.
What is the new value chain proposal by Astron?
The proposal consists of a new consulting service at a very early project stage, combined with product improvements and new accessories. Our global optimisation is based on the results of extensive research carried out over the past years and takes into consideration both the building envelope and the I&E (installations & equipment). The proposed solution contains unique selling points such as advanced transient building modelling including soil activation, new improved roof and wall details and the LMR600 roof system. This Astron NZEB approach is ahead of competition for industrial buildings.
Is excellence in building physics and building modelling paramount for NZEB optimization?
It is indeed, to the same extent as detailed I&E knowledge. With the new team, Astron physics of the building envelope and offer new product solutions to substantially improve its performance. The I&E know-how comes partially from Astron, from partnerships, and from Lindab ventilation for the HVAC part.
How does it work in practice?
We have 2 cases depending upon when we enter the project: either we support our Builder to improve performance of a building planned by his architect. Or we participate from the beginning to define together with the architect the most clever optimized solution that fulfills customer needs.
Are NZEBs profitable investments?
Yes, buildings with the NZEB concept are clearly the best economical choice. They are profitable in the long run if you now, for some buildings optimised at the conception stage, the investment cost in the building itself can be equal and even lower than the same building with a standard approach.
Do references exist?
A series of concept proposals has already been issued to our Builders in different countries with great feedback. As an example, an optimized solution for a 1,950 m² production building which meets the requirements of the German KfW-55 standard has been calculated to have a 10% lower global price versus a “common” solution (the price includes Astron building, erection, accessories, heating and lighting system, and KfW-55 grant).
Please ask Astron District Managers for details of this proposal and for the new service approach.
