"Green is the new Grey"
Interview with Lars Franzen, Marketing Manager at Astron Buildings
Let’s get straight to the point: is steel truly environmentally friendly and sustainable?
Yes, absolutely – steel is one of the most sustainable building materials available. It’s 100% recyclable without any loss of quality, which makes it a key player in the circular economy. At Astron Buildings, we rely on steel because it’s not only durable and strong, but also highly resource-efficient over its entire lifecycle.
Can you give us an example of how Astron integrates sustainability into its projects?
Certainly. Our buildings are designed to minimize resource consumption from the very beginning. We use advanced manufacturing technologies to reduce material waste, and our steel structures are modular – meaning they can be easily dismantled, expanded, or repurposed. This flexibility significantly extends the lifespan of our buildings and reduces the need for new construction.
What about the carbon footprint of steel?
That’s a valid concern. The steel industry has made major strides in reducing emissions, for example by using green hydrogen or electric arc furnaces powered by renewable energy. And because steel structures last so long and can be reused or recycled, their carbon footprint is offset over time. At Astron, we also work closely with suppliers who are committed to sustainable production practices.
How important is sustainability in Astron’s overall strategy?
It’s absolutely central. Sustainability is no longer a trend – it’s a necessity. Our clients, from logistics companies to industrial developers, expect solutions that are environmentally, economically, and socially responsible. That’s why we continuously invest in innovation, research, and partnerships to make our buildings even more energy-efficient and climate-friendly.
Finally, what advice would you give to companies looking to build more sustainably?
Think long-term. Sustainability starts at the planning stage. Choosing flexible, modular, and recyclable solutions not only conserves resources but also saves costs over the building’s lifecycle. And of course – talk to us. We’re happy to support you with tailored, future-ready solutions.
