School Building Construction - Astron Multi-Storey System - School Building Construction – Slovenia

ASTRON tells tales out of school

Very poor ground conditions caused by previous mining activities required a foundation design with a specific geometry of piled foundation under the columns, without foundation slab and without connecting the piled foundations to each other. In addition to the poor ground conditions, the engineers also had to overcome the added difficulties of extremely high seismic loading (Zone 9) and a snow loading of 1.5 kN/m², resulting in each column being fixed using 8 anchor bolts per base. To meet with the fire protection requirements, the sandwich panels used in the walls are F90 fire rated. Columns are protected using Knauf type gypsum boards, with rafters being protected using similar boards in combination with Armstrong suspended ceilings. The recessed corner entrance area and the cantilevered glazing detail were designed by the architect to highlight the rectangular shape of the two storey building. A double skin roof with a low pitch and architectural wall panels, both with 120mm thick thermal insulation, provide a building with an aesthetically pleasing and energy efficient finish.
