ASTRON - European news - 26 February 2007
ASTRON exhibits in steel! To celebrate its centenary, the town of Esch-sur-Alzette in the south of Luxembourg created five special exhibition buildings, each devoted to a particular theme or topic. Esch was, traditionally, the heart of the Luxembourg steel industry, lying in that industrial triangle of Luxembourg, France and Belgium that led to the Iron and Steel Commission and ultimately the founding of the European Union. It is appropriate, therefore, that one of the buildings was built of steel; a somewhat unusual ASTRON building constructed by Builder M.B.S. Resolutely modern, the building portrays "The meeting of generations and migrations". Its role was to act as a venue for meetings and interchanges between people from all walks of life, young and old, and of all races and nationalities. This will to express openness and integration was reflected in a small, but strikingly artistic, building that combines the traditions of steel with modern architectural practice. The futuristic structure was designed to accommodate conferences, meetings, small demonstrations, spectacles and concerts. The true challenge of its construction was to be found in its 3 cubes of blue, yellow and green laid out in a star shape and connected by walls of glass. The red Spacetec roof is elegantly supported by glassed structures. The architecture, ergonomics and dimensions of this building are not really typical of an ASTRON building, as most readers will know! A fine, if usual, reference nevertheless! |
