ASTRON unveils covered market in Cabo Verde

The Cape Verde islands are a target country for the development aid programme of the Luxembourg government. It has defined the priority sectors of the archipelago: food, education, health, water and decontamination.

As part of this co-operation between Cape Verde and Luxembourg, Lux-Development arranged for the funding and construction of a new, covered market for the city of Tarrafal. The existing market was extremely dilapidated and had become altogether too small and cramped. The small city of Tarrafal is located on Santiago Island, well known for its famous white sand beach. Less pleasant, but historically important, was its role as a detention center for Portuguese and Cape Verdean political prisoners interned under the rule of President Salazar. The client itself erected the building; supplied by ASTRON. Special attention was paid to the construction details and finishing. The building is completely open, it consists of a wide span modular building with two internal prop columns, a canopy and a suspended endwall. The internal layout meets all the needs of a market, providing ample spaces for the retailers as well as numerous rest and refreshment areas. With this functional and colourful ASTRON building, the island’s inhabitants now have a modern, large and airy market that meets the needs of sellers and buyers alike.
