Astron production and logistics center - Brewery - Conakry, Republic of Guinea
System building beats all the obstacles! One of the benefits of an ASTRON building is the ease with which the hundreds, even thousands, of parts and components can be shipped to job site. This claim has never been truer than in the case of the Sobragui project in Africa. The project is located in Kissidougou, which lies more or less in the middle of nowhere in the Guinean rain forest some 10 hours drive from Conakry, Republic of Guinea. The "road" between Conakry and the site is little more than a track, further complicating the transportation. The 6.000 m² building, with a 60 m clear span, serves as a production, bottling, logistics and distribution center for Unibra. Unibra is a Belgian holding company active in the African beverage industry, particularly in beer production in Guinea where its main subsidiary, Sobragui S.A. operates. The company’s first project in Conakry was highly successful so the company turned to ASTRON for this, its second, production and logistics center in Guinea. Shipping this 60 m free-span building on rough tracks in the rainy season and then erecting it in the middle of nowhere was a real challenge, made doubly difficult by the adverse weather. Nevertheless, it was accomplished thanks to the synergy between ASTRON’s expertise and the ingenuity of the local erection team Lajic who, despite an almost complete lack of modern equipment, found imaginative solutions to every problem! Lajic’s competence and involvement proved to be a key element in the success of the project. The plant, with its ultra-modern equipment and facilities has aroused great pride among the people of the entire region. Whether it could have been built without the benefit of system building, with every part down to the last nut and bolt being shipped from one source, is debatable! |
