Harbour dock for an ASTRON building! This ship-shaped building is to be found in the harbour zone of Le Port on the island of La Réunion (Overseas Department, France). Local ASTRON Builder Sircam constructed it for Conforama, a retail company specialising in furniture, hi-fi and electrical household appliances. After having initially considered a traditional construction approach, the customer was highly attracted by the freedom to plan internal layouts, important in the retail trade, offered by the column-free interior, a benefit of the ASTRON process. The technical challenges for Sircam and the ASTRON design Team presented during the design and construction of the 7.360 m² building were formidable. Its architectural complexity and the consequences of the geographic location of the island, which lies in an area of tropical storms, had to be taken into account. The 70 m span building was designed to accommodate the significant cyclonic wind load (280 km/hour) of La Reunion. Nonetheless, the Conforama project was to be the last ASTRON project for the company, which has now decided to concentrate its activities as a property developer in mainland France. MFC, which was involved in the civil works for the project, has taken over the role of ASTRON Builder. This unusual building with its ship-like architecture in its port surroundings, is an excellent ASTRON reference that MFC Builder will be able to exploit to develop its activities in the Indian Ocean area. We wish them good luck! |
