Even Pythons like ASTRON On June 1st 2004, an extraordinary and fascinating project has been inaugurated in Landau/Pfalz (Germany). On a total area of 2,500 m², the “Reptilium", Germany’s greatest desert and terrarium zoo, presents more than 600 exotic reptiles and amphibians from 5 continents in their appropriate environment. The entrepreneur family Wünstel made a cherished dream come true. On their demand, ASTRON Builder Baumgartner GmbH planned and erected a complete zoo. About 15 employees, including 6 keepers, make the visitors appreciate the world of reptiles and amphibians.One of the buildings, the desert hall of 544 m² with a steady temperature of 40° C and an integrated gastronomic facility, is a pure ASTRON building.For a better lighting, the building has a large window area in its endwall, additionally the single slope roof is equipped with special skylights of 8.70 to 13.30 m length, which are not held by a roof purlin every 1.50 m as usual, but by a double purlin every 3.00 m. The condensation which could arise eventually in this warm warm and humid environment is being avoided by using 5 nozzles that are installed on each skylight.The building owner had two good reasons for choosing the ASTRON building system and Builder Baumgartner: The Builder’s good reputation and the rapidity of the construction system– and Baumgartner fully met the expectations by assembling the ASTRON building within 3 ½ weeks only. Still, those seem not to be the only reasons for a great customer satisfaction. Since the building owner is convinced that he has made the right choice, he is pointing out the advantages of steel construction on his own website www.reptilium.de: "The terrariums in the main hall are made out of steel profiles, that normally are used for the construction of windows, glazings and curtain walls. The chief advantages of these profiles are that even large terrariums can be made by using relatively slender and filigree profiles and that windows and doors shut tightly."
