Astron- Industrial building – Hamm Germany – Steel Construction – Hamm Germany
Steel and Stone – a noble unionThe exceptional feature of this building is, without any doubt, the successful combination of steel and stone, giving an timeless elegance to the building. Four stone slabs of Brazilian quartzite, each 6.5 m high and 20 mm thick, make up the decorative façade elements. Each features dark blue/silver veins and has a fibre-glass backing for improved stability. During the erection process, which employed a truck crane with a vacuum lifter, it proved very difficult to locate these 80 kg elements in their corresponding U profiles due to extremely stormy weather conditions. Acoustic insulation was an additional challenge: the building was compartmentalised by means of separate separate frames as well as fire protection walls, so that neither the 3,2 ton crane nor the compressor in the production hall, generate disturbing noise levels either internally or externally. The owner also placed great importance on a high quality finish to the building interior: the production hall, for example, is clad with masonry up to half of its height to avoid damage that might be caused by the water used for dust absorption in the stoneworking processes. The architectural planning, based on a simple 1 x 1 meter module, was elaborated by the owner himself, as is evidenced by the demands of quality and aesthetics. Builder Heckmann constructed the building to those same high standards. Stonemason Hans Determann selected ASTRON Builder Heckmann partly due to the flexibilty of the ASTRON building system. Extensions of up to 7,50 m can easily be added on each side of the building to accommodate future needs. |
