Modern parking hall for nostalgic trams
In order to preserve a piece of the Darmstadt history for the future, the HEAG company planned a parking hall for the restoration and maintenance of their historic trams. The successful implementation of previous projects with expertise and sophistication made our longstanding Astron Builder PP Bausysteme GmbH the right partner for this parking hall project.
HEAG mobilo is the leading mobility service provider in Southern Hessen. Together with their subsidiaries they are engaged for an attractive and efficient public transport in the city and the region of Darmstadt. With about 700 skilled employees they monitor and control the public transport lines in Southern Hessen and ensure the maintenance and expansion of the tram rail network.
The generous 1,400 m² parking hall with a span of 25 m was built close to a track loop. One special challenge in this project was the internal high-voltage line of the sidings. They were backed up with an insulation against voltage loss and incorporated into the Astron ceiling construction. Special rubber lips protect the high-voltage lines from damage when opening the 3.5 m high wing doors.
The architectural design of the exterior facade had to follow the local requirements. The backside of the parking hall is cladded with some wall greening, fixed on a specially developed cable system. Toward the street, the building got a plaster structure, which perfectly fits to the surrounding buildings. Large windows and skylights ensure a friendly atmosphere to put historical trams right in scene. As HEAG mobilo GmbH operates since 2010 exclusively with renewable energy, of course this parking hall was equipped with a photovoltaic system on the roof.
The harmonious combination of modernity and nostalgia does not only attract the audience at the plenty events, but did convince also the jury to elect the impressive parking hall for "Building of the Month".
